Instructions:
Think about your favorite film or TV show and answer the following questions.
1. What is the premise of the plot? When answering this, consider the sequence of events
that occur.
2. What are the main themes of the story? (These are the big ideas explored through the plot, such as love, personal growth, revenge, death, grief.)
3. How is the narrative structured? Could you mark clear sections of the plot, such as a beginning, middle and end?
4. Is the narrative built around conflict? This could be:
-conflict between two characters
-obstacles that a character must overcome (these obstacles could be emotional or mental)
5. What type of characters make up the narrative?
- Is there a protagonist?
-Is there an antagonist?
-Are there characters who help the main character in some way?
- Are there some characters who simply exist for the main character to interact with
and help the narrative develop?
My response: Film being How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days
1.The premise of the plot in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days revolves around the
main characters: Ben and Andie who are both challenged to find a love interest and
make them fall in love within a 10-day period. When they cross paths, they
ultimately become the target of each other's game. However, after 10 days they
realize just how close they have become and begin to deeply regret the bets and
motive of using each other.
2.Main themes include: personal growth/self-discovery, love, communication,
honesty, etc.
3.This film is definitely structured through a clear series of events. These events
are unexpected and unfolded through numerous misunderstandings and chaotic
dates between Ben and Andie. One of the main reasons I like this movie is the way
production decides to present each piece of information but still upkeeps the
romantic and comedic elements.
4. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is not necessarily built upon conflict between
Ben and Andie its more personal conflict and much needed self-reflection between
themselves. Although they both must keep in mind their own bets, there are
undeniable feelings between the two. No matter how hard they try to overcome
these strong emotions it is extremely hard, therefore, in the end they decide to go
all in and admit to such feelings. In other words, their conflict is internal, and the
obstacles they face are not ones they can really tell anyone around them.
5.There are no clear antagonists although some may say Andie's boss and Ben's
girl co-workers, as they set each bet up and ultimately revealed the bets of each
other to each other. And obviously the protagonists would be Ben and Andie as the
story revolves around them and their unexpected romance. Both Ben and Andie
tow co-workers/friends help develop the plot tremendously. They help set up dates,
give advice, and help them stay focused on both bets. However, Andie is inspired
by her friend Michelles' failed relationships and how she handles such situations.
Michelle helps Andie make certain decisions and helps her decide that she really
did like Ben.
